What we cover in your review

Every medication review is personalized. We go through your complete medication list — prescription, over-the-counter, and supplements.

Drug interactions

We check every medication — prescription, over-the-counter, and supplements — against each other. Some combinations can reduce effectiveness or cause serious side effects.

Duplicate therapies

It's common for patients to be on two medications that do the same thing. We identify overlap and work with your doctor to simplify.

Side effect review

If you're experiencing symptoms you can't explain, they may be medication side effects. We compare your symptoms against your drug list.

Dosing and timing

Some medications work better at certain times of day or with food. We review how you're taking each medication and suggest optimizations.

Cost savings

We check whether covered generics are available, identify Low Cost Alternative options under BC PharmaCare, and flag any medications that may no longer be necessary.

Written summary

You receive a personalized written summary of everything discussed — your medication list, any changes recommended, and follow-up actions.

Frequently asked questions

Is a medication review really free?
Yes — pharmacist-led medication reviews are covered under BC PharmaCare's Medication Management (Plan M) program for eligible patients. There is no cost to you for the review itself. Prescription medications remain subject to your normal PharmaCare co-pay. If you are unsure whether you qualify, call us at 604-705-3644 and we'll check.
How long does a medication review take?
A full medication review (MedsCheck Annual) takes approximately 30 minutes. Follow-up sessions are shorter — typically 15–20 minutes. We set aside a private consultation space so you can speak openly with your pharmacist without interruption.
What should I bring to my medication review?
Bring all your medications — prescription bottles, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Even things you take occasionally (like ibuprofen or melatonin) can interact with prescription drugs. If you have a BC Services Card, bring that too. The more complete the picture, the more useful the review.
Will my doctor be told about the review?
Yes, with your consent. Your pharmacist will share a copy of the medication review summary with your family doctor. This collaboration often helps your doctor see your medication list from a different perspective and leads to positive changes. You can also ask us to send a copy to any specialist you see.
Can I get a medication review if I don't have a family doctor?
Absolutely. Many of our patients don't have a family doctor, and a medication review is especially valuable in that situation. Our pharmacists can help you understand your medications, identify concerns, and help you navigate the healthcare system — including referring you to a virtual doctor through our virtual clinic if needed.
How often can I have a medication review?
Under BC PharmaCare, you are eligible for one full MedsCheck Annual review per year, plus follow-up sessions as needed. If your health situation changes significantly — such as a new diagnosis, a hospital stay, or a major medication change — you may qualify for an additional review sooner. Ask your pharmacist.
