Cost & PharmaCare coverage

Assessment fee: BC PharmaCare pays pharmacists a $20 assessment fee under MACS — there is no cost to you for the assessment itself.

Prescription cost: Medications prescribed are covered under your existing PharmaCare plan (Fair PharmaCare, Plan C, Plan W, First Nations Health Benefits, etc.) with your regular co-pay and deductible.

No PharmaCare? Private pay is available using non-benefit MACS claims. We’ll tell you the cost before dispensing — most minor ailment medications are inexpensive.

Military personnel: Those without MSP coverage may still be eligible for MACS. Ask our pharmacist.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an appointment?
No appointment is needed for a walk-in visit — come in and ask to speak with the pharmacist. If you prefer a scheduled time, you can also book an in-person appointment. Call us at 604-705-3644 and we'll find a time that works.
Is there a fee for a minor ailment assessment?
BC PharmaCare pays pharmacists a $20 assessment fee, which means there is no cost to you for the assessment itself. Your prescription is then covered under your existing PharmaCare plan (Fair PharmaCare, Plan C, Plan W, etc.) with your regular co-pay. If you don't have PharmaCare, private pay is available — we'll tell you the cost before dispensing.
Can pharmacists prescribe by phone or video?
No. BC MACS regulations require the pharmacist to assess you in person. Phone and virtual consultations are not eligible for the MACS assessment fee. You must come into the pharmacy for a minor ailment visit.
What conditions can a pharmacist NOT prescribe for?
Pharmacists can prescribe for the 21 MACS conditions listed above. For anything outside this list — new chronic conditions, complex infections, or situations requiring a physical exam by a doctor — we will refer you to your family doctor or a walk-in clinic. We also refer if your condition does not respond to initial treatment.
Can a pharmacist prescribe for my child?
Yes, for most conditions. Pharmacists can assess and prescribe for children for many conditions including impetigo, oral thrush, pink eye, and others. We confirm the child's weight and medical history before prescribing. If the condition is outside our scope or the child appears seriously unwell, we direct you to a doctor or emergency room.
What does the assessment involve?
Your pharmacist will review your PharmaNet medication history, ask questions about your symptoms and medical history, assess the condition, and then recommend or prescribe appropriate treatment. The assessment takes 5–15 minutes in a private consultation area. You'll also receive counselling on your medication and a follow-up plan.
Can pharmacy students provide a MACS assessment?
No. Only licensed pharmacists who have completed the BC College of Pharmacists' PPMAC regulatory education module can provide MACS assessments and submit claims.
Is emergency contraception included?
Yes. Pharmacists are paid the MACS assessment fee for emergency contraception assessments, and it is included in the 21 conditions covered under the program.
What if I don't have BC MSP coverage?
Military personnel and others without MSP coverage may still be eligible for MACS. Ineligible patients can also pay privately using non-benefit MACS claims. Ask our pharmacist for details.
