Best Analgesic for Acute Pain in Children: What Parents Need to Know
When your child is in pain, finding the best analgesic that is both effective and safe can be overwhelming. At Pill4Me Pharmacy in Chilliwack, we often get questions like, “What pain medication should I give my child?” or “Are opioids safe for children?”
Thanks to a large meta-analysis published in JAMA Pediatrics, we now have clear answers backed by evidence.
NSAIDs: The Best Pain Medication for Children
The meta-analysis, led by researchers from the London Health Sciences Centre in Ontario, reviewed 41 randomized clinical trials involving nearly 5,000 children suffering from acute pain (lasting less than four weeks). The studies focused on common conditions like:
- Musculoskeletal injuries
- Ear, nose, and throat pain
- Abdominal discomfort
- Emergency room injuries
The analysis compared the most common treatments: NSAIDs, opioids, and ketamine.
Key Findings:
- NSAIDs (like ibuprofen), ketamine, and opioids all reduced pain compared to placebo.
- However, NSAIDs stood out for their balance of effectiveness and safety.
Why Are NSAIDs Better?
NSAIDs not only reduced pain effectively but were less risky than other medications. Here’s how they performed:
- NSAID pain reduction:
Weighted Mean Difference (WMD): −1.29
Modeled risk difference: 16% improvement - Lower need for rescue medications:
Children who took NSAIDs were 16% less likely to need additional pain relief (Relative Risk: 0.31) - No significant GI side effects:
NSAIDs did not increase the risk of gastrointestinal issues in the short term, unlike some opioids.
Are Opioids or Ketamine Safe for Kids?
While medium- to high-potency opioids and ketamine also reduced pain:
- They carried higher risks for side effects.
- They did not reduce the need for rescue medications.
- They may increase the chance of nausea, vomiting, or other complications in children.
At Pill4Me Pharmacy, we always advocate for safe, evidence-based treatments, especially when it comes to children.
