B.C. has a new prescription management program.

The province says that the new program will be implemented into all community pharmacies by end of 2025.

BC PharmaCare is Evolving: What You Need to Know About the New Provincial Prescription Management Program

Since 1995, PharmaNet BC has served as the backbone of the British Columbia pharmacy system. This province-wide network connects all B.C. pharmacies and healthcare providers, capturing every prescription dispensed in B.C. in a central data system. Whether you fill a prescription at your local pharmacy or a hospital, it’s logged into PharmaNet.

Now, the Government of British Columbia is rolling out a major update: the Provincial Prescription Management (PPM) program. This new digital system will expand and enhance what PharmaNet currently offers, improving both medication management and access to prescription care in B.C.

✅ What Is the New Prescription Management Program in BC?

The Provincial Prescription Management (PPM) program builds on PharmaNet by offering real-time access to prescription authorizations, active medication lists, and pharmacy interventions. Unlike the current PharmaNet system, which only tracks medications that have been dispensed, the PPM will allow full visibility into active prescriptions, remaining refills, dosage changes, and discontinuations—even if made by a specialist or a family doctor.

💡 Why Is This Important for BC Patients and Pharmacies?

With the new PPM system, patients in British Columbia can:

  • Fill or refill prescriptions at any B.C. pharmacy, no matter where they are in the province
  • Experience shorter wait times and more streamlined care
  • Trust that their prescription history is updated in real-time
  • Get better, faster decisions from their pharmacists and doctors
  • Avoid miscommunication between providers

For pharmacists and other healthcare professionals, the PPM platform enables a team-based care approach by creating a shared, centralized patient medication profile. This means all authorized providers can view, update, or download the same medication information, helping ensure safe, coordinated care across every touchpoint.

🖥️ Going Digital: A Big Win for BC Pharmacies

The transition from paper-based prescriptions to digital workflows is one of the most significant upgrades coming with PPM. Pharmacies across B.C. will soon be able to download full prescription records into their systems, record pharmacist interventions, and support better clinical decision-making with the most accurate and up-to-date information available.

📅 When Will All Pharmacies in BC Be PPM-Enabled?

According to the BC Ministry of Health, the rollout of the Provincial Prescription Management program is already underway. The goal is for all B.C. pharmacies to be fully integrated with the PPM system by the end of 2025.
